SURFaddict

SURFaddict – the Portuguese Adapted Surfing Association – was created on May 16, 2012, by a group of friends, including Nuno Vitorino, who practiced bodyboarding before a gunshot wound left him quadriplegic. Its original purpose was to help Nuno return to the ocean waves.

Over time, the Association grew and expanded its scope to more people, developing a community of participants, volunteers, and even instructors with specific skills. United in the pursuit of the pleasure of surfing, they are committed to transforming the sport into one for everyone, ensuring that disability, or a wheelchair, is not an impediment for anyone to experience the waves.

The essential characteristic of our Association is that participation is free of charge for all, based on a body of volunteers, surfers, and non-surfers. In this way, all participants enjoy the surfing experience without any cost.

Objectives

SURFaddict – the Portuguese Adapted Surfing Association – aims to make surfing available to people with any type of limitation, whether motor, visual, or cognitive.

But SURFaddict's role goes far beyond this purely sporting aspect.

We also have other objectives, such as:

Demystifying the issue of disability, helping to break down existing prejudices regarding people with disabilities;

Motivating these people to leave their homes or institutions and socialize, providing a different day for them and their families;

Mobilizing people for volunteering;

Drawing the attention of municipalities and society in general to the importance of accessibility.
